At Friends of MOET (FOMOE), a UK-based charity dedicated to supporting orphaned and vulnerable children in Malawi, we are thrilled to share the latest MOET Progress Report for the months of November and December 2024. Through collaborative efforts between FOMOE and Mangochi Orphan Education and Training (MOET), we continue to uplift young lives, ensuring they receive quality education, essential resources, and life skills to shape a brighter future.
This MOET Progress Report highlights the impact of collective action and the power of community-driven support.
Enhancing Nutrition and Hygiene: MOET Kitchen Renovation

In response to concerns raised by MOET's kitchen staff regarding inadequate ventilation and space limitations, significant renovations were made to improve working conditions. Thanks to support from FOMOE, the kitchen now boasts better airflow, an expanded feeding area, and increased space for meal preparation. This upgrade enhances hygiene and efficiency, benefiting both staff and students.

John Banda, one of MOET’s cooks, expressed gratitude: “The improved kitchen provides a more comfortable and practical workspace. The extended feeding area ensures that students can dine in a healthier environment.” This renovation marks a critical step in ensuring that students receive nutritious meals in a safe and well-equipped facility.
Promoting Sustainability: Permaculture Education at MOET
MOET hosted students from Nkope Community Day Secondary School for a hands-on learning experience in permaculture. With climate change affecting food security and local economies, educating youth on sustainable land use practices is more important than ever. During the visit, students gained insights into organic farming, soil conservation, and how permaculture can mitigate the effects of climate change.
Educators from Nkope highlighted the urgency of integrating sustainable agriculture into local curriculums, emphasizing that practical knowledge of permaculture can empower communities to develop food security solutions and environmental conservation strategies.
Expanding Creative Opportunities: MOET Arts & Crafts Club

MOET’s Arts & Crafts Club has seen remarkable growth, with an increasing number of students, particularly girls, joining the program.
Through painting, weaving, and woodworking, students are not only expressing their creativity but also gaining skills that could lead to future employment opportunities.
Many of their handmade crafts are being sold, fostering entrepreneurial spirit among the youth and generating additional support for MOET programs.
Essential Donations from FOMOE: A Lifeline for Students
One of the most impactful moments of the past two months was the arrival of a shipment of essential goods from FOMOE. This container included books, clothing, bicycles, and other necessary items that directly improve the educational experience of MOET students. These donations help bridge the gap for orphaned and vulnerable children who might otherwise lack access to basic necessities.
Moreover, the arrival of these supplies during the holiday season was particularly meaningful. While many families celebrate Christmas with gifts and festive meals, orphaned children often lack the means to do so. Thanks to these generous contributions, MOET students were able to enjoy a more festive and dignified holiday season.
Educational Field Trip: Discovering Lake Malawi National Park

To broaden students’ horizons, MOET organized an educational trip to Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its biodiversity and historical significance.
During the excursion, students visited the Environmental Education Centre, explored the park’s rare Mbuna fish species, and learned about conservation efforts.

Additionally, students explored historical landmarks such as Mwala Wa Mphini and the Missionaries' Graveyard, where they gained a deeper understanding of Malawi’s cultural and environmental heritage.
This experience reinforced the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship.
